Yarden Mt. Hermon 2002 (Sauvignon Semillion White) - Israel

THE WINE The 2002 Yarden Mount Hermon White displays a refreshing mix of citrus, floral, papaya and melon characters. Bright and flavorful, this medium-bodied wine is a crowd-pleaser. We like nothing better than to drink Yarden Mount Hermon White while dining al fresco, enjoying the freshest catch-of-the-day, hot and smoky, just off the grill. Some have even been known to add a dash of crème de cassis for an enjoyable "Kir" to be sipped among friends.

THE VINTAGE Except for an unusually warm February and March, cooler-than-average temperatures dominated the season leading up to the 2002 vintage. The weather caused a protracted season which resulted in a long fifteen week harvest. Picking successfully concluded with Sangiovese from the northern Golan at the end of October. May rains during flowering and two spring heat waves reduced yields by about 20%. The low yields and long hang-time combined to produce wines of very good overall quality. The 2002 Yarden Mount Hermon White is made mostly from Sauvignon Blanc, with Chardonnay and Semillon blended in for added depth and complexity. A cold fermentation preserves the natural vibrancy of these varieties. All of the fruit comes from vineyards in the cool, high elevation, northern Golan Heights.

THE ANALYSES Brix at Harvest 23.6, % Alc (v/v) 13.0, TA (g/l) 5.8, PH 3.38, RS DRY

THE APPELLATION The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. The Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin, in the central Golan.

Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (Full Bodied Red) - Israel

THE WINE The 2000 Yarden Sauvignon layers ripe berry, cassis and blackberry jam characters with rich oak and hints of fresh herbs and earth. This complex wine´s full body reveals additonal nuances of cedar and spice and leads to a long term attractive fiish. Though immediately enjoyable, Yarden Carbernet Sauvignon will continue to improve with bottle aging for years to come and should be a delight to drink over the next 10-15 years. We usually pull out a bottle of Yarden Carbernet Sauvignon on special occasions, enjoying it with friends, family and a great meal. We like somewhat extravagant foods with this wine, such as an entire beef tenderloin gently grilled over coals, but a simple steak thrown on the grill would also be great. Enjoy with lamb and stews, as well.

THE VINTAGE Between the record-breaking temperatures of July and the record-breaking rains of the last week of October, the 2000 harvest proved a high quality vintage. The fruit came in very evenly over the relatively short eleven-week havest, starting with the Muscat Canelli in the southern Golan and ending with Merlot in the north. Good fruit exposure and lower than average yields combined to give fruit with exceptional flavor. The 2000 Yarden Carbernet Sauvignon is made from several Golan vineyards and one is the Upper Galilee. These vineyards regulary produce our most outstanding Carbernet. The 2000 is 99% Carbernet Suavignon and 1% Carbernet Franc. Aging for eighteen months in small oak barrels adds to the wines overall complexity, depth and aging potential. Of these barrels, 40% are new, and 95% are french oak.

Yarden Galilee Chardonnay 2001 (Fruity Vanila Creamy White) - Israel

THE WINE The 2001 Yarden Chardonnay exhibits ripe pear, pineapple and apple fruit notes layered with rich oak and hints of butterscotch. This is a full-bodied, complex wine with a long, attractive finish. Yarden Chardonnay improves with a bit of age and drinks well for five to seven years following the vintage. We enjoy this wine with fairly rich foods such as smoked squab, duck confit or even Risotto Milanese.

THE VINTAGE In unusually warm winter and spring in 2001 caused the Golan`s earliest-ever start of harvest, which began three weeks prior to normal. Slightly cooler-than-average summer temperatures then stretched the vintage out to a long fourteen weeks. A heavy May rain fell during flowering, causing a 20% reduction in yields. This lower crop, combined with unusually small berry and cluster sizes, produced fruit with great intensity of flavor and color. Yarden Chardonnay is 100% varietal, coming from vineyards in the cool northern part of the Golan Heights, at altitudes of up to close to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) in elevation. This area consistently produces outstanding fruit. The wine ferments and ages sur lies in small French oak barrels for seven months. 50% of the barrels are new.

Yarden Sauvignon Blanc 2002 (Refreshing Fruity Medium Bodied White) - Israel

THE WINE The 2002 Yarden Sauvignon Blanc exhibits citrus, floral, tropical and apricot notes with hints of fresh figs, oak and vanilla. This refreshing, medium-bodied wine finishes with a nuance of kumquat. Yarden Sauvignon Blanc is ready to drink, but will remain in good shape for a couple of years following the harvest. We like to drink this wine along with sushi, freshly grilled sardines, ceviche or with a delicate fresh goat´s milk cheese spread thickly on a bit of crusty bread.
