Golan Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (Fruity Robust Red) - Israel

THE WINE The 2001 Golan Cabernet Sauvignon offers ripe berry and plum fruit notes rounded out with rich vanilla, spice and oak. This aromatic, medium-bodied wine finishes off with loads of fruit. The 2001 Golan Cabernet Sauvignon is immediately approachable but will age well over the next five years or so. We recommend drinking it with boldly-flavored foods, such as spice-rubbed well-marbled grilled steak or eggplant parmesan made with plenty of fresh herbs.

THE VINTAGE An unusually warm winter and spring in 2001 caused the Golan`s earliest-ever start of harvest, which began three weeks prior to normal. Slightly cooler-than-average summer temperatures then stretched the vintage out to a long fourteen weeks. A heavy May rain fell during flowering, causing a 20% reduction in yields. This lower crop, combined with unusually small berry and cluster sizes, produced fruit with great intensity of flavor and color. The 2001 Golan Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% varietal. The fruit comes from several vineyards in the central Golan Heights. The wine aged for six months in American oak barrels.

THE ANALYSES Brix at Harvest 24.3, % Alc (v/v) 13.5, TA (g/l) 6.1, PH 3.55, RS DRY

THE APPELLATION The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. The Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin, in the central Golan.

Golan Chardonnay (White) 2002 - Israel

Golan M. Avital 2002 (Fruity Medium Bodied Red) - Israel

THE WINE The 2002 Golan Mount Avital shows off bright red-purple hues and aromatic fresh berry, cherry, violet and black pepper notes. The wine is medium-bodied and very drinkable. We drink Golan Mount Avital, usually lightly chilled, with a wide range foods including full-flavored fish dishes, dim sum, mixed grilled vegetables or shredded-beef tacos. Golan Mount Avital can be enjoyed over a couple of years from the harvest.

THE VINTAGE Except for an unusually warm February and March, cooler-than-average temperatures dominated the season leading up to the 2002 vintage. The weather caused a protracted season and resulted in a long fifteen week harvest. Picking successfully concluded with Sangiovese from the northern Golan at the end of October. May rains during flowering and two spring heat waves reduced yields by about 20%. The low yields and long hang-time combined to produce wines of very good quality. The 2002 Golan Mount Avital is made from 31% Sangiovese, 30% Pinot Noir, 20% Gamay Noir, 14% Syrah and 5% Napa Gamay. All of the fruit comes from the central and northern Golan Heights, where cool temperatures promote the development of distinct varietal characters. Carbonic maceration, the traditional Beaujolais method, on 10% of the blend adds to the overall complexity and aroma profile of this wine.
